Manila, the capital city of the Philippines, was once considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Sadly, during World War II, Manila was almost destroyed, but despite the heavy damage, the city still managed to survive and thrive. Today, Manila is one of the few cities left in Asia that still bears traces of the Spaniards who colonized it back in the 16th century. Learn more about the Spanish past and Filipino future of Manila by booking your flights to Manila on BudgetAir.ca today.
It’s always a good idea to take the weather into consideration when going to Manila; since Manila has a tropical climate, there’s no such thing as moderate weather year-round. During the months of March, April and May, you can expect very hot weather in Manila, and from June to November, it’s all thunderstorms and typhoons. Most people choose not to visit Manila during those months, preferring to wait until the dry winter months of December, January and February.
One really great thing to do in Manila is to visit the Chinatown district of Binondo; it’s one of the largest of its kind in the world. You can choose to explore Binondo by foot or by horse-drawn carriage; either way, you’ll have a great time wandering around and seeing all the Buddhist temples, Christian churches and open-air markets scattered throughout the district. Also make sure to check out Intramuros, the oldest district in Manila and the original centre of the city. Intramuros, which literally means “within the walls” in Latin, gets its name from the fact that it is almost completely surrounded by a three-mile long stone wall.
Some great museums in Manila include the National Museum of the Filipino People, Ayala Museum, Bahay Chinoy, Casa Manila, Museum of Filipino Political History, Metropolitan Museum of Manila and San Agustin Museum. Get a breath of fresh air in this crowded city by visiting Rizal Park, Paco Park and Arroceros Forest Park. Manila has a wide variety of delicious foods that you should try such as chicharon, balut, isaw, banana cue, kwek kwek and silog.
